News & You, again...

Malaysian television broadcasting was introduced on 28 December 1963. Color television was introduced on 28 December 1978. Full-time color transmissions of grand launched until officially inaugurated on New Year's Day 1982. There are currently 8 national free-to-air terrestrial television stations in Malaysia and 2 national pay subscription television stations in Malaysia.

The most well known and the only two tv stations that is owned by the government is RTM1 and TV2. Others non-government tv stations is TV3, NTV7, 8TV and TV9.

As for newspapers, there a wide varieties of it but the most prominent one is Malay Mail, The Star, The Sun, New Straits Times, Berita Harian, Harian Metro and Utusan Malaysia.

For example like government tv station RTM1 and TV2, those two stations is fully support by government and no matter what their tv rating for the shows, they still get their paychecks unlike other non-government television station. But of course, RTM1 and TV2 will prioritize government advertisements and slots rather than showing actually entertainment.

As for TV3, NTV7, 8TV and TV9, they only get their payment based on what they show and people rating. If the show is good and well-liked by viewers, this will instantly increase their income. Vice versa, if the show is bad and receive less viewers, the amount of income they get will explain that show is not worth it.

News & You

Truthfully, I don’t really read newspapers and only read it if I was at hospital or somewhere else when there’s nothing to do. As for news, I sometimes watch Al-Jazeera or CNN since my father prefer those two channels but he still likes to watch local news every night. I prefer reading online news rather than reading newspapers. They update it immediately unlike newspapers which you have to wait the day after that to read the news.

I usually rely on Twitters to know when there’s something happen. Usually my friends will tweet about the news and to further know about it, I will sometimes refer to the hashtags or just googled the news. But sometimes, I will read newspaper to furthering know about the news through different perspectives.  Since my father works for police under government, he sometimes will tell things that have not being publish to public yet. He usually handle securities, homicides and raid cases.

But the internet news can be false from time to time, it is important to me to gather the bit pieces from different sources and perspectives. Different people gives out variety of opinions about certain events and not all of them will agree at some points.

I can be ignorant sometimes to everything that happens around me. But I still feel that I need to know because it is going to effect to everybody and our future. It also keeps me from being easily influenced by others.

Subject Matter: Theatre

The definition of theatre is a building or outdoor area in which plays and other dramatic performances are given.

In my interpretation, theatre is where actors do a live performance in front of the audience. Their acting is being supports by their costumes, props, sets, lighting, music, dancing and singing. Although I have never watch an actual theatre before, I still can watch them in television. Theatre performance also have their genres. They have opera, musical, comedy, drama and tragedy. Among those, I really like musical theatre. I really like seeing the actors singing and dancing while interpreting the scenes.

My favorite musical theatre have to be 'Hairspray'. The story is very inspiring, it is about an overweight and optimistic girl named Tracy Turnblad who loves dancing. She is very disagree with Velma Von Tussle, who is a colour racist and the producer of ‘The Corny Collins Show’. However, out of the most amazing characters in Hairspray, I really love Edna Turnblad. Her role is always being played by male actors, since it is a continuing tradition of having a man wearing women clothes to portrays her character.

The actor and actresses need a lot of training and be punctual at certain scenes since theatre is not same as movie. In movie, you can screw up the script as many times as you want but in theatre, they need recite the script without making any mistakes since they are performing live on the stage in front audience. This amazes me because they try to make their performance appealing to the crowds, unlike in the movie which the scenes can be cut, zoom in and out.

Like I said before, I have never watch a live theatre before. However, I will take the same concept as when I watch a live concert of one my favorite singer. Truthfully, I will not get physically or emotionally get excited when the singer sings inside the television, I maybe just nods my head to follow the music rhythm or just sing along. But when I sees the singer sings in front of me, live on stage, I start to go crazy along with the crowds by sing along and raise my hands on air. So what you see in television and see in real life is different. It is the same concept when I watch movie in cinema, I guess.

The actors can delivers their messages directly to the audience, even if the scene does not have any script and only shows the actor emotions, body movement, and of course it will accompanied with background music. It will surely pierce the audience heart and make their feeling wavers.

Social Group and Their Media

From what I have known, social group is a communication between two or more people who interacts with each other.  Different types of social group have different motives, roles and status. For instance, a gang is group that assembles in their own area, such as streets and neighborhood. They usually consist of rebellious teenagers and young adults who likes to hangs out. Their motives is to stand against authority and emits bad influence among other peers. For this week task, I have classify four social groups based on their age, generation and preferences of media forms.

The first two of the group consist of younger generations which I split them into two. The main and foremost group is young adult. These days, this type of group have more knowledge and experience with current technology than other groups. They try to keep themselves updated with new gadgets so they won’t feel left out by their other peers. With those technologies, they want to connect with their friends as much as possible since they are still in their rebellious age and have a feelings that their friends understand them more than their parents. They like to use social network such as Facebook and Twitter to keep updating with their peers circle news. Nowadays, instead of text messaging, they like to use phone applications like WhatsApp, LINE and Viber since they offer free messages as long as you have internet connection to send and receives messages. Although they seems to be friendly an talkative when online, but in real world they hardly even glance or talk face to face with their friends. Even if they gather around a table during break, each one of them will take out their cell phone or portable games or tablets and have online chat.

The second group is young children. It’s not surprising if a toddler is using a smart phone  or having a PS3 since parent these days is too preoccupied with their works and strictly disallow their children to go outside to play because the fear of having their child getting kidnap. I happen to have a cousin who is ten years old and she is very obsess of wanting to have a smart phones. She also like to update her statuses in Facebook and Twitter very frequently every day. I keep asking myself why she doing those kind of things at very early age since she is ten and should not have a mid-life crisis. I still clearly remember that I never bother wanting those things when I was at her age, I only want to play with my friends at the playground. But then again, I keep reminding myself that the past me and her is different now.  The world is moving forward and it’s kinda shame not equip yourselves with new things.

The third group consist of elderly people. Although I find that this group seems to equip themselves with hi-tech gadgets, but the truth is that they never explore the whole use of the gadget except for the basic one. Example like iPhone, from what I have observe is that they only use to make a phone calls, text messaging and capture pictures. Furthermore, when I ask them if they have updated their iOS, they will get confused of what I’m trying to say. But I don’t blame them since they prefer to everything simple. Most of them have account in social network like Facebook but they rarely use it. The reason that they create account on Facebook is that they wanted to reconnect with their lost friends especially their school classmates. Facebook is easy to use, user friendly and does not have complicated design. With a few directional, they easily will get the basic idea.

The fourth and last group is the creative people. They tend to sit in front of their laptop most of the time but that’s the truth. They need to make a research and preparation of what they want to accomplish and they have to visit various sites depends on what they do for inspiration. Youtube have been their main contributor since they always browse tutorial there. They also use Facebook or deviantART to exhibit their artworks online.

Media Use

When someone mention about media, I will imagine television, radio, and newspaper as the source to delivers information to public. It’s the way to influence people in large scale with immediate rate. Nowadays, people use digital media like internet to receive news rather than watching television or reading newspaper.

I, myself rather use internet to gather all information that I needs. If I want to compare speed of which type of media that deliver news faster within a day, I will say internet. Just a few clicks and bam! You can post information in like one minute. Furthermore, that within one minute the whole world will know what is happening.

Before, you can only browse internet through your computer and laptop. Now, you can browse internet inside your mobile phone, as long as you receive Wi-Fi in your area or have a Tri-Band 3G services and network.

Sites like Facebook and Twitter is the two examples of where people can easily delivers and receives information.  Twitter can make a news trending base on location and who you follow. While Facebook offers sharing options with your friends in their news timeline.

I am not converting people should use digital media instead of analog media. Sometimes people will have to rely on radio while driving to know the traffic situation especially in the morning during school days. For me, I use radio to find 80’s and 90’s songs or listening to any new songs. People who do not have internet at home will have to use newspaper to find job advertisements or shopping sale hour during festive seasons. Furthermore, reading newspaper can extend a person vocabulary and enhance their language knowledge. I am not a television person but I do find television can increase the bonds between family members. Me and my sister does not like sport but we still enjoy gathering in front of television with my parents and brothers.

Mobile phone is also a media. Today, mobile phone is not only able to make long distance calls, but also able to send text messages and photos as long as the other receiver phone supports the media. I rarely make a phone call but I do find text messages to be helpful since they can be precise and the person who receive my message will sure understand it without fail.

Without media, I pretty sure that I unable to survive without knowing what is happening around me. Although I am fine without television, radio or newspaper but I only can stand for a week without internet.
